CassaDark Release and the Insecure Writer’s Support Group

I’m posting a day early because Dancing Lemur Press has a new release today!

Before that though, it’s time for another edition of The Insecure Writer’s Support Group, founded by Ninja Captain, Alex J. Cavanaugh.

April 6 question - Have any of your books been made into audio books? If so, what is the main challenge in producing an audiobook?

Twelve of Dancing Lemur Press’ book are available in audio.
The biggest challenge is finding just the right narrator. There must be passion and personality in the voice.
We also must select just the right book. Several of our titles sell every month and a couple sell only a few each year.
Overall, we’ve been very pleased with our audio books!

By Alex J. Cavanaugh

His world is unraveling…

Bassan’s father is stepping down from command. His best friend almost dies when Bassan freezes. Now, he’s being sent across the galaxy to speak at an important conference. Despite saving the eleven races years ago, he’s paralyzed by doubt. Could things get any worse?

Once there, new acquaintance Zendar convinces Bassan to visit his planet for a humanitarian mission. Bassan’s special connection to ancient technology is the key to saving Zendar’s people. One problem though—it’s a prisoner planet.

On Ugar, he discovers things aren’t so straightforward. As each truth reveals itself, the situation grows more desperate. If he can’t find the right answers, he might die along with Zendar’s people. Can Bassan summon the courage to be a hero again?

Science fiction - adventure/space opera/space exploration

“Cavanaugh returns to the world of his Cassa Series…for a fourth inventive space opera.” – Publisher’s Weekly

Praise for his other Cassa books:
“…calls to mind the youthful focus of Robert Heinlein’s early military sf, as well as the excitement of space opera epitomized by the many Star Wars novels. Fast-paced military action and a youthful protagonist make this a good choice for both young adult and adult fans of space wars.” - Library Journal

Alex J. Cavanaugh works in web design and graphics. A fan of all things science fiction, his interests range from books and movies to music and games. Online he is known as Ninja Captain Alex and is the founder of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group. His Cassa books are Amazon Best Sellers and winners of the Pinnacle Book Achievement Award. I've read that audiobooks can be tricky in terms of figuring out if it the right type of book to go audio-style.

Congrats on the latest release of Alex's book.
I suspect it is a constant challenge for a publisher to find suitable narrators for such a diverse set of books.

Nick Wilford said...

Congrats to Alex! He's getting a lot of coverage today. Well deserved.

Congratulations on the new releases.

I like audio books when I'm driving on a long trip. Listening helps the time pass and keep me awake--that is if the book is interesting. At home I'd rather read a book since I don't have to keep my eyes anywhere else.

I am excited for Alex and Joylene, Diane! I wish them both every success with their. books. I rarely listen to audiobooks because I am so visual and kinesthetic. But that's me. I know many people really enjoy audiobooks.

I agree about the most challenging bit about creating audiobooks is choosing the right voice actor. It will be interesting to see what you do.

Both books sound great. I enjoy listening to audiobooks.

I don't have any of my books in audio yet but plan to soon. I can imagine how tough it must be finding a good narrator for an audiobook.

J.Q. Rose said...

Congrats to Alex and Joylene!! And to you and your team at DLP! The narrator is sooo important to the success of an audiobook. I have stopped listening to a book because the narrator's voice is not right for my listening ears.

Tonja Drecker said...

Huge congrats to Alex! On my own post, I couldn't really give any hints to audio books since DLP did such an amazing job for me.

Toi Thomas said...

Congrats on the new releases for Dancing Lemur and other IWSG members.

Carol Kilgore said...

Busy! Congrats on the new release and also on Joylene's new release. I haven't ventured into audiobook territory yet. If/when I do, I would likely start with my Coastal Connection books because while they're set in Texas, they're less Texas-centric. Too many other items on my plate at present to even think about that yet, though.

Elizabeth Seckman said...

I would love to have my books in audio, but I'm not sure the investment would pay off. I have to watch my pennies, unfortunately.

Lori L. MacLaughlin said...

It's great that your audiobooks have done well. I think finding the right voice would be a daunting task because it can either make or break the listening experience. Congrats again to Alex and Joylene!

Shannon Lawrence said...

It's good to hear that, in general, the audiobooks sell. I'll be looking more into them shortly. Congratulations to Alex and Joylene!

I love the concept of audio books. I just wish it wasn't so difficult to make and use/"read."
