The Insecure Writer’s Support Group and 5K at Sixty

It’s time for another edition of The Insecure Writer’s Support Group, founded by Ninja Captain, Alex J. Cavanaugh.

March 4 question - What elements do you include in your book launch? Or what do you have in mind for your future book launch? Or what advice do you have to offer to others planning to launch a book?

Research, research, research! (Exactly what I say in How to Publish and Promote Your Book Now.) Every genre is different and the landscape continues to change. Ultimately, you must reach your target readers. How do you do this? Through Facebook? TikTok? In person? It used to be so much easier but now an author has to work ten times as hard to reach his or her audience.

* * *

I turned sixty last month! Unbelievable. This year was low-key compared to last (lunch with almost 30 friends) - some cool gifts, went out of town, and dinner with friends. (As always, some cool stuff for the garden and kitchen but this year’s theme was noodle cat!)

And…I signed up for my first ever 5K run! I pulled a glute four weeks ago, which set me back a bit. (I had just dropped under 38 minutes for a 5K, too.) But I am determined to build up my strength and endurance and be primed for April and this run. Wish me luck!

What would you suggest for a book launch? Have you ever run a 5k?

60 somehow feels very young still, as I come closer to it! Happy belated birthday. :) No 5Ks here, but I do love my treadmill. Hope your injury heals quickly!

Happy 60th Birthday! It's awesome that you're doing a 5k to celebrate. And you're right that it's much harder to market books now.

Yay! The older we get the less pushback we need to tolerate from others! I've never done a 5k but I walked a marathon the year I was 50. 24 years later I'm not sure I could do such a thing, but strength training is really helping me. I'm about to market my newest novel and frankly I'm not excited. I'm daunted.

Happy 60th! Woohoo!

I agree. Research is key to a launch.

Congratulations: Happy Birthday!!! I never would've guessed 60, maybe 40!
Book launches are extremely mind-boggling. I wish I had lots of money to pay someone to do it all for me...LOL.
Wishing you luck for your run in April.

Wishing you more than luck -- success! I haven't run a 5k before but I also deal with exercise induced asthma, so we'll count our wins where we're at, eh? Actually, I was doing the math the other day because I regularly jog 2.3 miles (to keep those lungs working) and decided it wouldn't be much of a stretch to build up. But time, eh?

Congratulations on several fronts! Attaining the fabulous age of 60, your expertise in the publishing world, and that 5K time.

You look great! Nobody would ever guess you're 60. (I'm right behind you. I don't feel old at all!) Yes, I have run the 5K. I actually do it 3 times a week. :) You'll do great! Tiktok has actually been great for launching a book. Wish I had joined earlier!

I used to run 5 and 10k races several times a year, but injured myself back in my 40s (gads--20+ years ago. How did that happen?) and haven't been able to run consistently since. Best ever advice on a 5K (from my husband when I started running them with him): go out slow. Let all the jackrabbits go, and stick with your pace. You'll pass a lot of them when they burn out, and it's always more encouraging to pass others than be passed. Even if you aren't running to be competitive, it helps!

Happy 60th, Diane. It's weird, right? I'm approaching it and I can't wrap my braincells around the number. I hope and plan to wear it as well as you. Good luck with the 5K. You got this!
