The Insecure Writers Support Group and AI is Using Your Books Without Permission

It’s time for another edition of The Insecure Writer’s Support Group, founded by Ninja Captain, Alex J. Cavanaugh.

And for the first time ever – I am co-hosting along with Jennifer Lane, Jenni Enzor, and Natalie Aguirre.

The question for today: What fantasy character would you like to fight, go on a quest with, or have a beer/glass of wine with?

I’d just want to hang out with Pippin from LOTR all day! He is all about the fun, naïve and innocent but with a good heart. Think of all the trouble we could get into!

* * *

I have taken on the management of the IWSG Facebook group. We are trying some new things, such as First Line and Marketing Hint.
If you are part of the Facebook group, please get involved and let us know what you think.

* * *

Several of Dancing Lemur Press’ titles are being used without permission to train AI. All authors should check for their titles and complain if they find them being used.

To check - The Atlantic

To complain - Action Network

* * *

And since I am all about the food boards…

I made a meal food board (with two kinds of sliders, pork chops, mini-corn dogs, deviled eggs, and more) for game night followed by that snack board.

All the dips were homemade. Fresh fruit and veggies. I am so enjoying making food boards!

What character would you hang out with and are your books being used without your permission?

That's a lovely food board. I'm sorry Al is using some of Dancing Lemur's books. Thanks for co-hosting with me.

That is an awesome food board! So fun!

The AI thing is terrible. I read another author had 10 of her book there too.

Pippin is a great choice! Thanks for the links. I found one of my books there and will be complaining strongly.

Pippin is a fantastic character.

Thanks for co-hosting this month. I enjoyed your answer to the question. Thanks for the info about A.I. usage, I will look into it. Your food board is off the charts. Looks good.

Wow! Your food boards are amazing. Thanks for the tip on AI rip-offs!

You're making me hungry, Diane! As to the AI debacle...all of my titles are being fed into the "great brain drain." But then, they've been on the pirate sites since they were published. Huge sigh!

emaginette said...

This is beginning to remind of Cher in Mermaids. What fun you must have. hehehe

Quick note: I've closed my Facebook account. So it's not the group, it was the FB.

Your food board looks amazing! I agree that Pippin would be so much fun!

Oh my gosh, Diane, you make me soooo hungry. Everything looks delicious. I love fresh homemade dips and sauces. They are always way better than store bought. You can invite me over to eat at your place anytime. Thanks for cohosting this month!

I imagine a girl could end up with quite the hangover, hanging out with Pippin. But it would be worth it! @samanthabwriter from

Good Choice. I never would've thought of Pippin. He is such a sweet troublemaker! I think all authors are very, very upset and angered about Meta using our books without our permission, and it appears there is nothing we can do about it. Love your food board. Thanks for co-hosting.

I've seen two of the LOTR movies but haven't read any of the books and I can't remember any of the characters, but coming from Tolkein I'd say they would be interesting.

I think you can do some great things with IWSG FB group. I wish you well.

Eyeballing your snack board and it makes me hungry even though I'm in the middle of my lunch! I had one of my earlier books used when I first started out and didn't know there was anything I could do about it. Now, I'd be strapping on my creative gunbelt. Them's my words, Pardner!

Wow! That food board looks amazing -- and for how many people???? Thank you for co-hosting and for the tip to check out both IWSG's FB page and that use of our books without permission. I'm going to check right now! Have a wonderful writing month ahead.

Wow on the food board. The AI thing is crazy. I expect nothing to come of the lawsuit. Book piracy has never been punished that I know of. It's disgusting.

Olga Godim said...

I like your food board adventures. Your photos are always so yummy.
I read about AI using books without permission from another source: Ilona Andrews's blog. They and their writers colleagues are fighting it through the Author Guild.

Rebecca M. Douglass said...

Pippen would be fun! And yes, per the search engine from the Atlantic, one of my novels and an academic paper are being used. If they are training AI off my academic prose, god help them!

Sandra Cox said...

Love your snack board. Thanks for co-hosting and taking on FB. Have a great one.

Kate Larkindale said...

Thanks for the AI links! A couple of my books were used and I'm not pleased about that at all. Your snack board looks amazing! I'm hungry now.

Hi, Diane! Your food tray looks fabulous. You should see my kitchen! Terry and I just unloaded the top two shelves of all our cupboards and are trying to purge. It is not going well. 😂 I'd love to jump into your photo and indulge, since there is no hope of supper here until I box things up. I dearly love Pippin ~ awesome choice. Several people have left links to their blogs on FB regarding our question. I'm making a point of visiting their posts via FB. Next month in my IWSG blog post, I'll promote the FB site and provide a link to it. Thank you for taking over the leadership of the FB site, and thank you for co-hosting. I hope you've been having fun. I've always enjoyed doing it. Take care!

My goodness, thanks for reminding us of Pippin, a unique character from the past. It felt good to see him evolve from an occasionally recklessness kid to a leader of the hobbits.
LOTR was such a contrast to our world today, where AI seems to have no guard rails.
Wishing you heaps of success with managing our IWSG Facebook group
Your food board looks amazing!
Thanks for co-hosting our April blog-hop. You're a busy gal, that's for sure.

Leigh, that is why I am Spunk On A Stick - energy!

Holly, I was surprised they weren't using even more of ours, just 8.

Nick, complain!

PJ - LOL!

Beth, that was for four people and after a big dinner. LOL I tend to overdo the food boards.

Rebecca - LOL!

Louise, thank you for all your help with FB.

Thank you for the nice words about my food board, everyone. Want to come over for a snack?

Well, you did a great job co-hosting, just sayin'! That food board looks delish, nom nom. Thanks for the intel about copyright issues--I submitted a request to remove my books but haven't followed up to check.

The AI stuff is so infuriating!

Liz A. said...

The AI stuff is terrible. And it doesn't even work all that well. The food board looks good.

Lidy said...

Thanks for co-hosting today!
The AI issue is horrible. And I feel things will get worse before it's dealt with.
My fantasy character meet and greet are from the Harry Potter universe. Most of which are from Gryffindor which is funny since I'm a Ravenclaw alum.

Kalpana said...

Your food board looks fantabulous. Thank you for co-hosting the IWSG this month and for the tips about AI. AI is such a pain and so unnecessary in its present avatar. Maybe good things will come of it, who knows.

Janet Alcorn said...

I can think of so many great uses of AI, but none of them involve replacing human creativity. I'm sorry these companies are using your books (or anyone's books) without permission.

Steven Arellano Rose Jr. said...

Thanks to you and the others for co-hosting! That's really neat that you decided to co-host for the first time !

Pippin, among other Hobbits, would be a great one to hang out with. I wouldn't mind hanging out with Hobbits. So many of them seem so easy-going and friendly. They never seem to be full of themselves.

J.Q. Rose said...

Pippin is a fun pick. Yes, one of my books is in the AI training steal. Who do I complain to? Thanks for co hosting.

J.Q. Rose said...

Oops, just spotted the link for complaints. Thank you.

Jean Davis said...

Oh my goodness, the mischief you could get into with Pippen. LOL. He'd definitely be all about that delicious looking food board for sure!

Oh, gosh! My stomach just growled ;-) AI stealing our work is not cool at all! Thanks for the heads-up and for co-hosting!

That food board looks AMAZING - it's mid-morning, and my tummy is gurgling just looking at it.

Thank you for taking on the management of the FB page. I don't use the platform that much, but will make a point of visiting.

Pippin is a great choice for a drinking companion. Actually, he sounds like a great companion for almost any activity :)

Crystal Collier said...

I definitely wasn't the happiest cookie when I found out about the AI stuff, but I'm grateful I was given the heads up. *tips hat*

Love the food board! That's my kind of snacking.
