Just a couple books that are essential while you are composing your novel or other work:
A dictionary - do NOT rely on Spell Check!
A thesaurus - there's always more than one way to say it and redundancy is annoying
A style book - I use The Chicago Manual of Style
There's a lot of books on the shelf for writers, but you better have those three on hand first!

Good, in fact essential advice indeed. I keep a tab for dictionary/thesaurus.com open at all times, and I have bookmarks handy for other similar references. I just put The Chicago Manual of Style on my books-to-get list.
The manual is huge and covers so much - well worth the purchase!
