Remakes Blogest, Instagram, SoundCloud, DLP Swag, and the Holly Jolly Holiday Show

Hosted by Alex J. Cavanaugh and Heather M. Gardner.

Remakes – most of them suck. Now and then, one comes along that is as good as, if not better, than the original. And after all of the bad ones we’ve endured, we want to know about some good ones.

On November 13, 2017, blog about your favorite remake: movie (or television show into movie and vice versa), song, or book – or all three! Post a YouTube video and links where we can find these treasures. Tell us why THIS remake doesn’t suck!

I knew instantly what I would pick!

The first band I ever fell in love with was Electric Light Orchestra. A good friend gave me a 45 record of their hit Turn to Stone for my 12th birthday and I was hooked. I immediately began buying all of their older albums, including their very first, No Answer.

I immediately latched onto the one hit from that album - 10538 Overture.

Over the years, it remained my most favorite ELO song and one of my top ten favorite songs of all time.

And then in 2006, Def Leppard released an album called YEAH! On it, they covered some of the songs and bands who had influenced them over the years.

Now, I am a HUGE Def Leppard fan. I’ve seen them five times in concert and Bringin’ On The Heartbreak is one of my most favorite songs. When I realized one of the songs they covered was 10538 Overture, I was ecstatic. One of my favorite bands covering one of my most favorite songs - it doesn’t get any better than that!

Most of you know the song from the movie American Hustle. They played it every time the movie won an Oscar, which just delighted me to no end.

I’m going to give you three versions of the song.

The first is the original recording remastered:

This is the 2000 performance, which sticks closely to the original, plus it has the lyrics:

And this is Def Leppard’s rendition:

ELO is a band that resonates with me on many levels. I discovered them the year after my father died. So this song holds a lot of magic for me. And Def Leppard’s remake honors those memories.

What remakes matter to you?

I had a Def Leppard tape in the 80s. :) I didn't realize that they had an album out in 2006...cool! I'll check that out.

The 80's singers/bands are the best.
There are so many of them: Duran Duran, Bon Jovi, The Police... their music is evergreen!
Have fun at the Holly Jolly Holiday Show, Diane!
Dancing Lemur Press is going places and doing it in style!

Awesome that the remake of the songs you love was so good.

And that's great what you're doing with your publishing company. You're putting so much great effort into getting out the word. Hope that it all works out good. Can't wait to hear an update.

I liked ELO back in the day and remember the song well from American Hustle.
Cool we have book swag.
Thanks for participating in the blogfest!

I don't know either of these I'm afraid. I've heard of both of course because they're huge! But don't know the song. X

I used to be so good at getting my Christmas shopping done before December, but this year I've barely started. Bleh. ELO brings back some good memories though.

Diane Burton said...

How great that the remake of a beloved song could be as enjoyable as the original. Good luck with the holiday show.

Pat Hatt said...

They did justice to the song with the remake indeed. Sure a hopping all over at your sea.

Now that's a cool remake! Good luck with the holiday show. My mom was visiting last week, and all my Christmas shopping is done except for a gift for my husband. Have a great week! :)

Elizabeth, they've had about 4-5 albums released since YEAH.

Natalie, I'm doing my best to spread the word.

Tamara, I am completely done with mine.

Christine, doesn't it feel great to know you are basically done?

Going Christmas shopping today!

I wrote about a bunch of cover songs for my post, but as for which one matters MOST to me... I'll go with "Fly Me to the Moon," because that's what my wife and I danced to at our wedding. Its most associated with Frank Sinatra (and it's his version we danced to) but he was far from the first artist to cover it. The original was by Kaye Ballard, I believe.

I'll have to listen to some ELO. You've piqued my interest. As to Christmas, I'm already terrified. So much going on and so little time to attend to it.

My link didn't work on the Linky. I think it's because I screwed up the path with the switch to my new, cranky blog. www.cleemckenziebooks.com

Oh, you're bringing back those high school memories with the Def Leopard reference :-) I can't say that I really know any of ELO's songs, although I'd probably recognize them if I heard them. I'll have to check out the video clips. Cheers - Ellen

I really like both version. I'm not a huge Def Leppard fan, but I do love me some ELO.

10538 Overture has always had that Jimi Hendrix vibe. It's awesome.

ELO was so similar to the Beatles that I instantly became a fan. I liked the concept of introducing the classical sound to rock music. And I became a fan of Def Leppard back in the 80's. I've never seen either group live in concert, but I still enjoy the music of both groups.

Looks like you took a couple of my tips for Instagram and Soundcloud. I love that even a publisher can find something from my project. :D

Like both bands, you name especially Def Leopard was a big fan when I was younger still am. Just not all about music the way I was when I was younger but still love it.

CD, that must be an old song then.

Lee, I'll visit your new one.

Ellen, you've probably heard Hold on Tight.

Jay, it came out during that time period, so it has the sound.

Lee, I wish I had seen ELO. Especially on their Out of the Blue tour with the giant spaceship.

It's always fun when a song you like is remade and is good. You can listen to it multiple times and no one can complain of you listening to the same song over and over, right? LOL

Heather M. Gardner said...

What a great song that is! Thank you for sharing it with us. You obviously have great memories surrounding it!

Thank you for joining our blogfest today!!!

ELO! Yes, I loved them too.
Have a great week, Spunk.

Def Leppard are popular for their sounds because of the clear, loud and crisp musical harmony in keeping with their vocals, drums bass and guitars. Great music choice!

J E Oneil said...

I never even thought about a song remake. Good idea. :)

Jemi Fraser said...

I like that Def Lepard version too! :)

Great music and bands! I hope the "Show" goes well and is lots of fun.

Sandra Cox said...

Did you see ELO is going on tour?

I remember this song from back in the day. I don't think I knew Def Leppard did a remake. Always nice when a remake is good. :)

The Dancing Lemur swag looks good.

I love that song. The remake is good. Congrats to DLP.

I do like ELO. They have a great sound. I don't know if I ever heard this song before.

They managed to keep them pretty close while putting their own spin on it each time.

Hi,

Great music choices. Yesteryear's bands are the ones that still feature prominently in most people's playlists. They are timeless. Visiting for the blogfest and glad I did.

Elizabeth Seckman said...

I love ELO! Guardians of the Galaxy this summer introduced them to my kids, so now they're listening to them too.

Music can heal the soul. Glad the band was there when you needed them.

Stephen Tremp said...

Two great bands here. The 80s had so much great and diverse music. Did not know Def Leppard remade this song.

J.H. Moncrieff said...

That's really cool that one of your favourite bands remade your favourite song.

I love Metallica's version of Bob Seger's "Turn the Page" and Nirvana's version of Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World." In both cases, the songs suited the artists so well that a lot of people don't realize they WERE remakes.

I mostly hate film remakes and think they're unnecessary, but I did enjoy "A Perfect Murder," which was apparently a remake of "Dial M for Murder." Since I've never seen the original, I'm doubly glad for the remake. But remaking "Psycho"? Argh, why?

I saw someone mentioned Metallica and that made me think of an entire album they did called Garage Days. I loved that one back in the day. Of course, I thought it was all original material back then. haha I didn't find out for a couple of years that it was all remakes.

Good luck this weekend!!

Have a beachy week!

I like Def Leppard's rendition. They're a good band!

Hope your Holly Jolly Holiday Show goes well.

I haven't tried Instagram yet, mostly because I don't spend much time with my phone. I'd be interested to know how effective it is as a marketing tool.

Beverly Stowe McClure said...

I'm still lost in the 50's. Elvis, anyone? Everly Brothers? :)

Have a great time this weekend.

I don't Christmas shop anymore. My family is scattered from coast to coast. Just getting together is gift enough.

Sandra Cox said...

Anxious to hear how the show went.

L. Diane Wolfe said...

JH, they have already remade it once.

Sherry, the show was "eh." I've just started with Instagram and will be exploring it further.

Beverly, that's wise.

Sandra - "eh." Won't do it again. Not a good venue for books. If I had a dollar for ever person who said they don't read, it would've more than paid for the booth.

Nick Wilford said...

A great band, I didn't know this song though. I agree that a favourite band covering another favourite band is pretty sweet!

Karen Lange said...

Remakes - yeah, they usually aren't that good. First one that comes to mind was one of my daughter's favorites when she was in school, The Parent Trap. We liked the original and the remake as they each had their own personality and same general theme.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving week! :)

H.R. Bennett said...

Ooo~ I've actually never heard the original. Very cool! :D

kimlajevardi.com said...

I had a friend in high school who was obsessed with Def Leopard's music. I felt similarly about Bon Jovi.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Sandra Cox said...

Kudos on the merchandise. It looks great. The Parallels mug is still on my to get list.
Hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving.

Karen Lange said...

Thought I commented already, but I guess not! Hope you had a good Thanksgiving. :) Yeah, remakes are tricky. There are very few I like.

Sandra Cox said...

That's too bad about the Christmas show. I'd be embarrassed to admit that I didn't read.

I am not in shopping mode yet and I really need to get going. (Except for the Grands of course. Heh. Heh.)
