Secondary Characters Blogfest

Hosted by Rachel Schieffelbein in celebration of her book, Secondary Characters, which releases on May 28th.

Sometimes secondary characters steal the show, (or the book) and become our favorites. On May 22nd we want you to tell us about your favorite secondary characters from books or movies, or both! Whether it's the funny best friend or that goofy kid next door, we want to know what secondary characters you just couldn't get enough of and why.

I will name a couple favorites.

One is Pippin from The Lord of the Rings movies.

First off, Pippin is adorable. I’ll just get that out of the way right now.

But the real reason centers more on his personality. Pippin isn’t the smartest, but he is genuine. He exudes joyful naivety and is always up for some mischief.

I just see hanging out with Pippin for the day as an adventurous and fun time.

Next is Hammy the Squirrel.

He’s dumber than Pippin but even more innocent. He’s just a bundle of nervous energy. Since I am a lot like Hammy (not dumb but sometimes naïve) I can really relate to him.

And it would be fun to hang with Hammy!

Last is Matt Gardner.

He was a secondary character in my own series, The Circle of Friends, and he grew on me quickly. (Eventually he became a main character in Book II.)

Matt is a good-looking football player and a ladies’ man. He’s not a cocky, malicious jerk though - Matt is all about the fun. He’s rarely serious, and this stems from issues in his past rather than insincerity. Matt has a good heart and wants to do the right thing.

His playful spirit is his charm though, and the reason I fell in love with the character.

I'm sensing a fun pattern here...

Join the fun! Who is your favorite secondary character?

Some great picks for winning personalities! I guess the danger with such strong secondaries is that they might steal the show. :)

Great picks! I will have to think about it, but I agree sometimes the seconds are giving the firsts a run for their money ;D

Nicely done...off to find out more about the book!

Hope you are doing well!

Pippin is adorable. And Hammy, come on? Who doesn't love some Hammy?

Great picks!!

Hmm? I've got to think about this for a while. Got it! Mario Cantone from Sex And the City. Steal a scene every time.

Pippen and Merry worked really well together. I always enjoyed them in LOTR too. They're the guys who always make you laugh.

It's been so long since I've seen LOTR- I forgot Pippen was out there. LOL

Some great secondary character picks. Like Pippin's expression. : )

Fun picks. I read Circle of Friends, years and years ago, but never saw the movie. I need to.

Nice picks and, sometimes, the "secondary" characters are way more interesting then the main ones :)

Oh, I love Pippin! And Hammy too. I turned a secondary character into the main one in book II as well.

I picked more obscure characters for my hop post. Pippin is truly a loving genuine person. He can sometimes be forgotten in all the blood, magic and action of LOTR. Hammy sounds like fun. Matt sounds like a good guy, cool that you created him.

Pippin is a fabulous secondary character and adds so much to the overall feel of the book.

Hammy was not the sharpest in the forest, that's for sure.

great secondary character post!

oh pippin! He does steal the show. I have characters like that--minor ones who manage to creep up to centerstage!

Ella, the second book will always be my favorite. Might have something to do with Matt.

Em-Musing, I'm afraid I've never watched the show.

Julie, I wish it had been a movie!

Jenny, that sounds familiar.

Tara, yes I did, and I loved Despicable Me's minions.

Hi Diane,

Yes, I've finally arrived. Indeed, a fun theme happening. Apparently, I'm Penny the Jack Russell dog and modest internet superstar's favourite secondary character.

Congrats to Rachel and yay, another blog hop!

Be well, Diane.

I love Pippin, too! My favorite secondary characters are Hermione and Ron from Harry Potter, and Grandma Mazur from the Stephanie Plum books.

If I had to go with LoTR I would probably pick Eomer who should have had a bigger part.

I'm learning about so many new characters today! But I do know Pippin and he's great! Good choice!

What would become of Gandalf if there was no one he could say "Fool of a Tuck!" :D

Off the top of my head, here are a few of my favorites:
Winnie the Pooh's friend Tigger--who doesn't love that bouncy personality?

Sherlock's Watson, of course. A classic. Also the current TV-version Watson as played by Lucy Liu.

Cool, smart Snoopy typing away on his dog house.

Gary, Penny is the main character!

Susan, yes he should've.

Pippen is a great choice! I was always partial to R2D2 & Chewie :)

Hammy is the best rodent ever!

Interesting how Matt Gardner turned into a main character in book II.

Love this blogfest! It's a great idea, and really makes me think about the potential for secondary characters. I have one in the WIP that may get her own book eventually. :)

Love your fun picks for this fest. Hammy and Pippin would be energizing or exhausting to spend time with . . . but it would definitely be a day to remember. :)

Spock is probably my favourite secondary character. Ron Weasley's a close second.

Hammy seems to be a favourite all round.

I'll second you're pick on Pippin. Adorable.

Pippin and Merry got right on my nerves. So did Frodo come to think of it. I'm a Bilbo fan.

Fun is the most important quality. :) Though I must say in LotR, Samwise is the one who stole my heart.
