A to Z Challenge - Quotes

For the A to Z Challenge, I’m posting promo and other tips for writers, along with a daily photo. (All photos taken by me.)

They say it’s easier to ask forgiveness than permission. But if you’re quoting someone, it’s better to ask permission than to get sued!

Quotes, excerpts, facts and figures - in print or online - are copyrighted and require permission to use. The same applies to song lyrics.

There are always exceptions, such as reviews of your book or public domain.

If in doubt, here are a couple publishing law websites to check:

Pub Law

And if you can’t get permission? Next!

And I just found the cutest blog participating in the A to Z -Flat Stanley and Friends.

I agree to ask Permission is harder than to ask forgiveness.
What annoyed me a few months ago I browsed on a poetry site and found some of my poems there under a different writer's name. After much consultations with the moderator of the site saying the poems were in fact in my books and are copyrighted she hastily removed them.

Yvonne, that is awful.

I've been plagiarised twice in my career. It ended a friendship :(

Plagiarism is indeed awful...it happens at times you come across an article and then the only words that you shout out loud being..."Hey...that's mine!" and followed by a whiplash and a ruined day!

sQuid Attack...was quite an attack :D :)nice nice!

None of us want to see our work stolen.

Yvonne, at least you were able to get them removed.

Donna, that's sad.

KRITI, I can set anything on Spunky and he doesn't seem to care.

Yes, writers have to be so careful.

Good tip! I've gotten to the point where I just don't quote others or used trademarked names in my stories. :)

I sure wish quotes that reached a certain level of fame became public domain. I mean I know they do after a certain period of time, but it would be nice if it's sooner. If I ever get quotable, I am going to give them for free, provided they're cited. Heck, it's advertising.

Diane,

Thanks for the links regarding copyright law. Those are helpful!

Also, I love the picture. The cat reminds me of my pretty girl. :-)

Plagiarism by any other name is still plagiarism.

The cat looks like he's counting to three before attacking the squid. ;)

Glad I don't use quotes.
And there's a squid on your cat...

Good advice! And nice squid attack :)

Haha...don't know how you got your cat to sit for that, but kudos to you for doing it! :)

Great advice, as well.

I guess I'll just make up my own quotes. I give myself permission to use them.

Quoting is a great way to give praise to the author. I like being quoted; I don't like my words taken and used without some kind of acknowledgement.

Love the black cat. They always are my favorite.

I have a theory that many of the world's problems are caused by lazy people; plagiarism is just one more thing that supports that theory.

Great tips. And thanks so much for a fun Friday photo!

SQuid on the cat is hilarious. Thanks for referral with my Flat Stanley Blog, much appreciated.

What a bummer, but better than a law suit. I'll just keep them in my pinterest board. Though I think dead people are ok to quote (at least after some time has passed).

What a cheek using your poems under their own name.

What a patient puss cat.

I take care with quotes and pictures, myself, and do my best to come up with both on my own.

I'll check out the links you provided too, but I thought that it was permissible (i.e. don't have to ask)to use quotes under a certain # of words (can't recall the precise #) with attribution, of course. Now, I'll definitely double-check.

Okay, I did just look and what I was remembering is the 'Fair Use Doctrine' and it does not specify #s. It all depends on the use and its context. Better to play it safe and always ask permission.

Thanks for this info L.Diane. I was totally unaware about the quote/song lyrics issue...

So does this include the sharing of inspirational/motivational quotes, etc? Are websites or blogs that include these types of quotes infringing on the authors copyrights?
