Quotes, excerpts, facts and figures - in print or online - are copyrighted and require permission to use. The same applies to song lyrics.
There are always exceptions, such as reviews of your book or public domain.

What annoyed me a few months ago I browsed on a poetry site and found some of my poems there under a different writer's name. After much consultations with the moderator of the site saying the poems were in fact in my books and are copyrighted she hastily removed them.

Plagiarism is indeed awful...it happens at times you come across an article and then the only words that you shout out loud being..."Hey...that's mine!" and followed by a whiplash and a ruined day!

Good tip! I've gotten to the point where I just don't quote others or used trademarked names in my stories. :)
I sure wish quotes that reached a certain level of fame became public domain. I mean I know they do after a certain period of time, but it would be nice if it's sooner. If I ever get quotable, I am going to give them for free, provided they're cited. Heck, it's advertising.

Quoting is a great way to give praise to the author. I like being quoted; I don't like my words taken and used without some kind of acknowledgement.
Love the black cat. They always are my favorite.
I have a theory that many of the world's problems are caused by lazy people; plagiarism is just one more thing that supports that theory.

I take care with quotes and pictures, myself, and do my best to come up with both on my own.
I'll check out the links you provided too, but I thought that it was permissible (i.e. don't have to ask)to use quotes under a certain # of words (can't recall the precise #) with attribution, of course. Now, I'll definitely double-check.

Okay, I did just look and what I was remembering is the 'Fair Use Doctrine' and it does not specify #s. It all depends on the use and its context. Better to play it safe and always ask permission.

So does this include the sharing of inspirational/motivational quotes, etc? Are websites or blogs that include these types of quotes infringing on the authors copyrights?
