Tales From The Bookshelf - Real Vampires Review

Real Vampires, Night Stalkers and Creatures from the Darkside by Brad Steiger

Paperback: 320 pages
Publisher: Visible Ink Press (September 1, 2009)
ISBN-13: 978-1578592555

I'd seen other reviews of this book and it intrigued me. I love true stories of the supernatural and own many books on ghosts, the Loch Ness Monster, etc.

This book was a little heavier than anticipated. There’s a lot about witchcraft and Satanism and the first chapter is about the Lilith, creator of succubi and first wife of Adam. (Hmm… don’t recall THAT chapter in my Bible!)

However, there are some interesting true accounts of vampires and other oddities. Covering past figures such as Elizabeth Bathory and Jack the Ripper, the book delves into evil tendencies of man. The chapter on the Chupacabra was really fascinating. There’s even a chapter on vampires and UFOs. (Lifeforce, anyone?)

Again, it was a bit too dark for my tastes and I felt the author presented a lot of opinion as fact. But if you want some odd, creepy reading, this is your book.

5.5 out of 10
Disclaimer - this book was received as a gift (from my husband, who felt it was one of the worst Christmas gifts he’d ever given - LOL) and I was not paid for my review.

Mmm.. I like supernatural too, but this sounds, as you said, a bit too dark for me. I don't care for dark, supposedly true tales. Evil does exist and the darkness of this type of book (or movie) is just too creepy for me.

Sounds like something completely different...and sometimes I like having books like that on my nightstand (although they might give me nightmares after I read them!)

Sounds interesting and I love paranormal stories, especially true ones, however it really annoys me when someone calls mere opinions and conjecture fact. I think stories are just as interesting to read if they are folk tales or fiction.

I remember seeing Lifeforce years ago. I may have to rewatch it.

The book sounds interesting, but I think I may be vampired out.

Some people would really enjoy this book! It was just a bit too dark for me...
And I just wanted the fact.
Just the facts, 'Mam.

Does sound interesting, but rather scary.

Tell the DH to look at it this way - his gifts can only get better.

I prefer strictly fictional vamps and paranormals. Too much reality scares me.

I usually love science fiction and horror but agree with most of the other commenters - this one looks too dark for me!

I do love reading true ghost stories (my family has a few of their own) but have to admit that I suffer from several sleepless nights directly after reading them! The older I get the less brave I am for the true stuff...give me a nice fictional character! What a wuss I am!

I saw a TV show about "Real Vampires" in which a guy showed how he feeds. First, he took out his fake fangs. Then he stuck a guy in the back with an xacto knife and sucked the guys blood. That's real for ya!

But, what is now going around as vampire sounds a lot more plausable, that is psychic vampires. Those are regular humans, even though many claim they are not human, who can harvest other people's energy. I'm sure anyone reading this has felt that happen before.

I too am an author and just happen to have a recently published book that stars two women who have this psychic vampire power. Go to Amazon and take a look. You may find it worth your time to read. It is entertaining.

Sounds interesting, but not something I'd be reading before bed!

I can vampire and ghost stuff before going to bed - but if I watch a werewolf movie, I'm up all night! Go figure...

Not that much into vampires. A book on lycans would be interesting.

And I remember Lifeforce! At least the naked vampire chick walking around...
