There are many words in the English language that are commonly misused. Always check the exact definition and spelling to be sure you are using it properly in a sentence.
The Chicago Manual of Style lists numerous troublesome words, such as-
affect - effect
adverse - averse
already - all ready
altar - alter
avenge - revenge
etc.

Even though the difference is not a difficult thing to grasp, I always have to think twice about affect - effect.
They list many words that confuse me! For many the difference is subtle, too, such as same meaning but one applies to a person and the other a thing.
Nothing makes one feel dumber than reading The Chicago Manual of Style, too!
