Writing Articles

Articles are a good first step for most authors, both before they are published and to promote their work.

Articles can help you to build a reputation and gets your name out there in the world as a writer. It adds to one's credentials and can lead traffic back to the author's website. If you are an expert in any field, write an article on the subject. You can write on any subject - your hobbies, your professional work & knowledge, your experience, a local event, and your book or future book's topic.

Magazines, websites, newspapers, books - all are good places to submit your article. Some will pay you for your articles, particularly magazines, while others will simply be a source of free publicity & resume building.

Writersdigest.com has a list of places that accept articles. (Plus a whole lot more!)
Other websites that accept articles are articlecity.com, ezinearticles.com and ideamarketers.com, plus there are thousands of sites that would accept an article that appeals to their audience.

So get your name out there!

You're right, writing articles is a great way to develop your scribing skills and get your name out there. I wrote a series of GIMP-related article/tutorials back in 2001 for the now defunct Pinehead.com, and they ended up getting published on Linux Today, Newsforge, and several other online outfits I've forgotten the names of. The articles went over fairly well as they were geared to newbies and weren't overly technical, and the whole experience gave me a great deal of confidence in my ability with the written word long before it ever occurred to me to write poetry or fictional prose. Some traces still exist: http://www.linuxtoday.com/news_story.php3?ltsn=2001-02-24-004-20-PS-HL-SW

If possible, take that article and republish it in a new forum - or two! Get it back out there where others can read & access it. You never know where it might lead, Mike!
