It’s time for another edition of The Insecure Writer’s Support Group, founded by Ninja Captain, Alex J. Cavanaugh.
October 6 question - In your writing, where do you draw the line, with either topics or language?
There is no skirting around the answer. My writing falls under the same guidelines as Dancing Lemur Press’ – no R-rated or salacious content. There will be no F-bombs. There will be nothing that goes against my faith. There will be no extreme violence or sex. No dogs dying. Or cats. It will be realistic but uplifting.
My series The Circle of Friends has a slogan – get inspired to achieve your dreams! And that is what I aim for when I write.

Webinars!
I have two upcoming seminars, both Websites & Blogs, and they are webinars anyone can register for and they are free.
The first is Wayne Community College, October 19 from 1 to 3 pm. You can register HERE.
The second is With Roanoke-Chowan Community College, October 21 from 6-8pm. You can register for that one HERE.
Both will feature a Power Point presentation and attendees get a handout loaded with links, info, and more resources.
I prefer live events, but webinars will have to do.
At least I got to do a live event last weekend. And it was very successful!
Where do you draw the line in your writing? Want to virtually attend a free webinar?
I'm the same way--no language. And I'd never commit professional suicide by harming a dog or cat in a book, ha. Know your webinars will be fantastic tools for your students!
ReplyDeleteOne of the best decision i ever made was contacting Dr Otonokpo to help me get my lover back, I was life filled with happiness after i contacted Dr Otonokpo because he didn't just bring my lover back to me he also made our love for each other more unique and superb. If you need to spice your relationship with more love and attention contact Dr Otonokpo on his Email Address otonokpotemple@gmail.com, call/whatsapp him via his contact +2348114129781 and be happy just like i am, thanks Dr Otonokpo for your great work.
DeleteI love that! I love how you put your faith first :)
ReplyDeleteHi Diane, even I prefer live events. But for the time being, due to Covid19 protocol, its Zoom sessions.
ReplyDeleteLive or online, at least they are events.
ReplyDeleteLive is so nice, direct interaction with everyone. But webinars are a good alternative right now, and it does allow for a broader (region wise) audience.
ReplyDeleteMy previous comment didn't publish - trying again!
ReplyDeleteOur audiences have diverse wants so it's good that we all have different approaches to our writing as well
You sound busy as usual, Diane. Take care and stay safe.
ReplyDeleteI write steamy contemporary romances so I'm all in on the on page sexy times and my characters do cuss. I do shy away from violence in my stories. It doesn't really have a place in the romances I write since I don't do the dark romances.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you had a great event, and your theme for your series sounds like the theme for all you do. Nice work!
ReplyDeleteGlad you had a great event. Virtual events are great, but I love in-person ones. Have a great writing month.
ReplyDeleteHi Diane - I so agree with you ... good luck with your webinars - I much prefer to be in the audience. All the best - Hilary
ReplyDeleteYour event looks amazing! Glad it was successful. In my writing, if a character is evil...I want the reader see just how evil. Nowadays, there's a white washing going on to the masses about evil like the TV show Lucifer. I won't watch it...and this is coming from me who wrote about evil witches...but God always the hero.
ReplyDeleteLeigh, he is!
DeleteI agree with the lines you set for Lemur Press and your personal writing. I'm okay with online events because I can get to see authors I wouldn't otherwise see. Hope yours goes well.
ReplyDeleteI like that you have those standards for Dancing Lemur Press. You'll have a reputation for producing entertaining, wholesome books.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the webinars!
Clear rules make it easier to get the words down. :-)

You've always been very clear about the guidelines. I'd prefer in-person presentations, too, but these are the next best things. Good luck. I'm sure all will go well.
ReplyDeleteI like your motto: "realistic but uplifting". I'm adopting it.
ReplyDeleteHi L. Diane,
ReplyDeleteCongrats an a successful event! Like you and the others, I do agree with in person, but it is wonderful to have an alternative during these unpredictable times.
So glad you got to do an in-person event and know you had a great time. I'm all over the place with language. I use whatever fits the characters and the story. The same with sex and violence. Even so, I have my own personal boundaries that I won't cross.
ReplyDeleteI face timed with another author who was going to be attending one of your webinars:)
ReplyDeleteOh wonderful!!!
DeleteCongrats on the event! I, too, prefer in-person, but am grateful for opportunities to attend remotely, if grudgingly. 🤣
ReplyDeleteI admire your standards. Our world is much too short of anything uplifting or inspiring.
Thank you for being true to your faith. There are some things in this world that are not needed and unfortunately we find too much of those things everywhere we look.

Tossing It Out
Keeping it positive. I like it!
ReplyDeleteI rather like virtual events. You don't have to get dressed or drive anywhere. Good luck with them.
ReplyDeleteUplifting stories are definitely the way to go.
ReplyDeleteYeah. Forgot that. There is another line. I won't kill a cat or dog either, except from old age if the books go on in years or something. People are okay though lol
ReplyDeleteNo cats or dogs will be harmed!
DeleteI can't do gory violence and definitely no animals will be harmed in my writing...well maybe mosquitos but that's all.
ReplyDeleteAs a cozy writer, you won’t find any overt violence, language or sex in my stories. Nothing I write calls for it.
ReplyDeleteI love your slogan! Unfortunately I can't register for your seminars as they are only available for US residents. I'm sure they will be great even though you are not presenting in-person!
ReplyDeleteSorry out-of-country can't attend!
DeleteYay for successful events! I hope you get a lot of people for your webinars. Unfortunately I don't have much time outside of work and home to attend.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the live event! It feels good to get out in the world again.

I’m with Alex, events are events. It’s good to connect.
ReplyDeleteBooth looked great, congrats on the live event. Signed up for webinar. Happy IWSG! Thanks for visiting me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog.
ReplyDeleteI like the standards of Dancing Lemur. I always know what to expect from the experience. I'm glad your event went well. I'm going to try to do more events in the new year.
I don't draw any lines. I also don't write violent scene. I'm not good at that, nor does it fit with my genre.
ReplyDeleteGreat question.
Be well, Diane.
Cool I registered for you two webinars looking forward to them. Do you offer replays?
ReplyDeleteThese are through the college and they don't do replays I'm afraid.
Deleteso great to hear you are staying active! how are your webinars organized? do you talk to them or do they ask you? and yay for live event success — all great news!
ReplyDeleteTara Tyler Talks
Look at all those wonderful books!! Live events are great.

I am probably going to get my mouth washed out with soap at the Pearly Gates before I'm allowed in.
ReplyDeleteStick to your principles. The world could use more principled people!!
Are those webinars the same as the one I did or are they new stuff I need to know?
