Helping Others

For the A to Z Challenge, I’m posting promo and other tips for writers. Today it’s helping others. For this topic, I thought I’d give you an example.

My friend and author mentor is p.m. terrell. We met several years ago when I supplied an article for one of her websites. Over the years, we have helped one another with speaking engagements, book festivals, book sales, and writing. Just recently, I purchased one of her books for my step-sister and she announced I am on the committee for the first North Carolina Book ‘Em event to be held next February.

It’s the friendship and guidance where she’s helped me the most, and I hope I’ve returned the favor.

True success is based on how many people are richer for knowing us. And when all else is gone from our lives, it's friendship that will matter most.

Who are you helping today?

  3. I believe that if we didn't help each other, quite often we wouldn't be able to make it out of bed.

I'm glad the two of you have found each other and have been able to achieve new and higher goals together, cool!

So, what's the book 'em event and where would it be held? I'd love to go!

  5. Elliot, it's not too far from Raleigh.

Words, I'll send you the website - and it will be in Lumberton, NC.

Karen, those are the people that change our lives for the better.

  8. Awesome advice! You get out of relationships what you put in. If you're willing to help someone, they won't mind helping you in return.

  10. I havenb't helped anyone lately, but I do help whenever I can. I do a lot of refering and back linking. Last year I helped a few young newbies develop a much more professional looking blog. ANd I like to host two or three authors each month and give them additional traffic they may not otherwise receive.

  14. A good reminder that we're all here for a purpose. I try to help other writers on the network where I'm a member as I was published because of the help other writers gave me.

  15. It is a wonderful world when people help each other. When I do, I usually benefit as much or more than the person(s) I''m helping. Nice reminder.

  16. I think so many people are on this earth so that we CAN help each other. I just wish more people realized that!

I've been helping my BFF and her hubby. She recently found out she was pregnant, and a couple weeks later her husband was diagnosed with cancer. It's been a stressful, exhausting time for them. We've begun a team in his honor for the Relay for Life, so all our energy is going towards that. Also stores in my area have been collecting donations for Japan, so I donate some money whenever I can each time. Any little bit helps!

  17. I *hope* that my blog is helpful to writers in the same place I am, as I post what I learn as I do it, though I'm not yet a published novelist. I figure I've had so many questions, and if there's a place for answers as they come maybe it will help someone. And I've noticed people are willing to give feedback on there in comments to help me, as well.

Good luck on the A to Z Challenge!

  18. Madeline, so true.

Stephen, there's a lot we can do offline as well.

Helen, is that not a hoot?

Laura, you are an amazing friend to do all that.

Shannon, that's why I do the tips here - been down the published road.

  20. This is the best advice that I have found for my career. I could not have done what I've done if others haven't helped me. That's why I always try to make myself available to people when I can.

  21. Being helpful is so important. It's an investment that doesn't always have an immediate payoff, but what goes around comes around as the saying goes. I have found this to be true.

I sometimes receive emails from bloggers asking for my help with something. I hope what I have to offer (considering my limited knowledge) benefits them and it makes me feel honored that someone would come to me and ask for help.
