The Insecure Writer’s Support Group, Snowmageddon, Charcuterie, and Turning 60

It’s time for another edition of The Insecure Writer’s Support Group, founded by Ninja Captain, Alex J. Cavanaugh.

February 4 question
- Many writers have written about the experience of rereading their work years later. Have you reread any of your early works? What was that experience like for you?

I have re-read my first series, The Circle of Friends. While I would like to do major rewrites and editing, I will admit, the stories still move me. Especially Sarah, Book II. I sent it in to a Writer’s Digest contest and it received high marks for character development.

Getting a chance to re-read and edit the stories for my In Darkness series before its release was priceless. Love it!

Snowmageddon, Charcuterie, and Turning 60

Yes, it was a pretty snowy morning on Sunday. We got over 10 inches. However, note the bottom left photo. That pile in the snow is my gazebo which had bamboo lattice on three sides with three vines and multiple plants inside. Flattened. We managed to get it up, saved the plants inside, and tied it off. (Other bottom photo.) New metal arches arriving this week to help prop it up. Then we start removing all the shattered metal pieces from the top and bamboo pieces from the back.

The final charcuterie boards for a while as one of our game night friends is having knee surgery this week and we won’t meet again until March.

And, I turn 60 on the 16th. For my 50th, we went to Universal Studios. Would love to go back since they have a new Minion ride, however – the $4,000-5,000 price tag really put me off.

So, instead, we are getting a walk-in shower next month and later on, I get a trip back to The House on the Rock!!!! If you have never been (or ever heard of the place) it is amazing beyond words. Saw it in 1989 and was simply enthralled. Housing the world’s largest carousel (underground!), an infinity room, an organ room, a room with 250+ dollhouses, etc., it is just incredible. Visit the site for more info. For some really great images though, Google what visitors have posted online as the site itself shares few photos.

What is your experience reading over earlier work? Experienced some serious snow this season or ever visited The House on the Rock?

  1. Happy 60th Birthday! I hope you enjoy your trip and new walk-in shower. It's my 70th this year, and I'm planning to remodel my bathroom too.

  3. Aww, that was one mean winter storm. I'm amazed at how quickly you're getting it back together. As I've said before—you have more energy than any woman know. 60? Those will be your good years, I liked to call mine as the "sexy sixties" And I don't blame you for not going to Universal.Your second option sounds intriguing. Take some photos and share next time.

  5. Yay! Happy birthday. Whew! Universal really cost you that much? I'm a local...and super spoiled, I guess. Just the price of admission. Granted, we don't go overboard on food and the hotel price is truly reasonable. I'm going to have to check out The House of Rock. Might have to add that one to the bucket list.

  6. Happy Birthday!

You have so much snow and I'm in the interior of BC and have only rain. I don't feel like I'm living in the north this year. hehehe

I love what you said about your old series. It's where I fell with my shorts. :-)

  7. Happy 60th Birthday! I would never guess your age. You look great! Have fun at the House on the Rock. Sounds like it will be a great experience!

  8. Happy 60th (youngster :D)! I did do a lot of re-reading and revising when I put together my short-story collections, and I need to do more (more collections, and probably more editing even of the stories I've already published). Short stories I can handle. Rereading my novels would lead to either despair or years spent in revising them!

  10. Happy birthday! Sorry about your gazebo and hope you manage to get it strong again. At sixty, a walk-in shower sounds smart! (Don't worry, I'm ahead of you so I know of what we speak!)

  11. That is some snow to flatten your gazebo. I hope you can restore it.
Happy birthday! I'm also a February girl. I'll turn 70 on the 20th.

  12. Oo, girl, I turn 60 this year, too. Let's agree to be 59 and holding. LOL A walk-in shower is a good choice. I was so glad I had mine when I had my surgery. Next on the list is for us is grab bars. Just accept it. hahaha HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
