A to Z Challenge - Libraries

For the A to Z Challenge, I’m posting promo and other tips for writers, along with a daily photo. (All photos taken by me.)

I could give you all sorts of facts and information about libraries. They’re great for those without a means to purchase books. They’re great for research. They’re a great place to discover new authors. And while many are closing, libraries still outnumber bookstores.

So, let me provide something you might not know.

Libraries don’t return books.

And once a book has been checked out X amount of times, it needs to be replaced.

Isn’t that great?

And your daily photo - "Lady of Sorrow"

I also wanted to post a picture of the wonderful homemade gifts I received from Ella. I sent her some doilies so she could make something pretty with them and she sent me these delightful items. Thank you, Ella.

  1. As a child I used to spend much time at our library, to me music and reading was my life.

Thanks for your comment, you ask if you would be able to get "The Proms" in your country, someone else saw your comment and informed me yes it would be possible.

  2. Ah, I miss the library. There are no libraries in English where I live.

  3. My condolences Clarissa. So nice of Ell to send you those things. I love libraries and so happy I live close to one. A ten minutes walk.

  5. I still go to the library but not nearly as often as when my children were small. Especially, in the summer, we went weekly. They picked out their books for their daily reading hour. Such memories of wonderful summers in the library with my kids :) Lucy from Lucy's Reality

  7. I've always wanted a library in my house... With mostly no windows, only torches, stone floors covered with red rugs lined with bronze colored tassels, hardwood shelves rising into the darkness of the arched stone ceiling...
    I guess I need a castle first.

  8. For booksellers, and for patrons who don't want to get pink-eye from a Robin Hobb, yes, definitely that replacement policy is splendid.

  10. My heart swells with joy whenever my 14 year old son asks to be taken to the library! :)

  11. After reading your post, this makes me want to go visit a library again to read books in my spare time. I haven't gone to the library to casually pick up a novel and read since... so long ago!

  13. I love libraries for all those reasons and the fact that they give me a place surrounded by books and the quiet time to read them.

  14. Yvonne, thank you for letting me know.

Ella, I can't wait to see what you create. Thank you again.

    Hi, Felicity! Welcome.

David, that would be a cool library.

    Hi, Debra.

    Winfield, I haven't either.

  15. I'm a library hound and huge cheerleader for an institution that 1) supports authors by buying books 2)supports literacy by keeping reading free and available and 3) often supports the community and is a hub for learning and creativity. To me, libraries are one of the pillars in our society!

  16. What a treat to get things from Ella.

I'm glad our library added a branch much closer to me.

  17. The Library system here in palm beach county Florida is fantastic, a greta place to read magazines for free. they also have activities and speakers. One of our most beautiful ones (I just found out from my son's teacher) Is a great place to get married.

  18. I used library for today also. I love those wonderful places.

  19. With the economy in the toilet, those libraries that are open are packed to the gills with people who cannot afford to buy books. The one in SLC is always crammed with individuals reading. I love to see that. I hate it though when libraries won't accept donated books because they are self-published.

  20. Lady of Sorrow looks like she just read my L post. We love the library and I especially love the library store where the old books get recycled for pennies!

  21. I know my books are in a lot of libraries, which is very cool!
    Awesome photo.
And that was very sweet of Ella.

  22. I haven't been to a library in a long time - I miss it. Cute gifts from Ella!

  23. I hadn't even considered that libraries outnumber bookstores. I don't check books out from libraries like I did when I was a kid, but I use them for the community resource they double as.

  24. Diane, I used to love going to the library as a child, the stillness and peace. They are now shutting down so many libraries here in the UK, so we now have to travel further, they are no longer local for the children which is such a shame. Loving your photographs, and I shared your blog in my L post. Blessings, Amanda

  27. Never considered that libraries do outnumber bookstores. I do love getting my audio books from there! And they offer so many services, including writer's groups, and I go to Toast Masters at a library. :)

  28. I have had a lot of success with libraries. I hold workshops for them and they allow me to sell my book after. it has been great exposure!
Thank you for these wonderful tips.

  29. I love libraries. I don't have much time or get out much enough to hang out at our local library. Maybe after we move, who knows?

  30. Such a beautiful photo and full of emotion. Awesome. Have a great weekend!

  31. Someone else mentioned libraries today, which reminded me I need to check ours out.

I guess this is the second reminder to tell me I -really- need to check ours out :)

Those things Ella sent you look great!

  32. I'm a HUGE fan of libraries!! I am constantly at the library doing research. Often I find the depth of information in the books housed in a library much more useful than the shallow information on the Internet. I remember the first time I found out a library was carrying a book of mine -- that was truly magical.

    ReplyDelete
  33. MCV, married at the library? Now that is a first.

Tony, there are ten times as many libraries. Probably more.

    Amanda, thank you.

Nancy, Toastmasters is a fantastic group.

Thank you, everyone. I am very behind in comments and visits and will see you all tomorrow. Today needed to be a day of finding the house and completing a formatting project for a client.

  34. Sadly, there wasn't a nearby library when I was growing up so I never got into that habit.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes, and the libraries in your neighborhood? Well, you can easily become known to them and work with them. Some of them even might end up recognizing you with an award which happened to me recently.

How do you get to know them? You can start with this tip: Offer to decorate one of their windows or display cases. Be sure the theme ties in with your book. (-:

    Best,
    Carolyn

  36. I love libraries for so many reasons. That's one of the reasons I appreciate my publisher -- they market mostly to libraries.

  37. When I was in the UK, going to the library was one of my favorite activities. But here in Portugal they're very few of them so I've lost that pleasure unfortunately.

  38. Our town library is wonderful, so many great programs for grown-ups and kids! And I really like your Lady of Sorrow photo, it's beautiful. Thanks!

  39. I also wrote about libraries for my L post. I had never thought about the check-out life of a library book, although it makes sense that it would eventually need to be "retired."

  42. Love the Lady of Sorrow photo. The gifts are beautiful too. How sweet!

  43. Hi Diane,

Libraries, a wonderful source of knowledge and a place I can get totally absorbed in. We are fighting, with a passion, to keep our libraries open in England. Government cutbacks have meant some are now under threat of closing. That would be a tragedy.

You took a very nice photo of the "Lady of Sorrow." Very kind of Ella to send your those homemade gifts.

    Be well, my friend.

    Gary

  44. Many years ago, I used to work in a library five days a week. On my days off…I went to the library, of course.

Those gifts from Ella are lovely, as is your photograph of the "Lady of Sorrow."

  48. I miss the library days. As a child, I remember a trip to the library as such a treat. Our kids have so much information available to them, in an instant, that they cannot appreciate libraries the way we did.

  51. I love libraries! Being in a library reminds me that no matter how many books I've read, I'll never run out of books to read.

  52. I love the library, but I also love using the bookstore as a library, by grabbing a few books and magazines, and skimming through them while grabbing lunch and coffee at the built-in coffee house. :)
