Publishing Industry News and Friday Inspirational Photo

News around the industry…

From the The New York Times:

“The Harper imprint of HarperCollins Publishers said on Tuesday that it was creating a new list of books, called Infinitum Nihil, that will publish titles reflecting Mr. Depp’s eclectic tastes and interests.”

(Yes, that is THE Johnny Depp.)

According to The Next Web:

“Haynes Publishing is launching its first range of eBooks, and interestingly is bypassing the ‘traditional’ means of selling them such as Amazon and Kobo, opting to sell them independently through its own website…
“Now, the company will be coming into the 21st century with a range of titles published in the open eBook standard ePub format, and will see the books landing on iPads, Sony e-readers, Android and other compatible devices.”

And from Publishers Weekly:

“Pop culture fans jammed the aisles of the Javits Center for all four days of the New York Comic Con, held this past weekend. Attendance was estimated as 116,000 by show runner and ReedPop v-p Lance Fensterman, making it the second largest comics and pop culture show in North America.”

  3. Cool photo!
I'd heard about Depp and the new imprint.

  4. Laura, probably just trying to capitalize on his name.

Karen, there's something scary about a Ferris wheel, isn't there? They make me more nervous than any roller coaster.

  5. Haven't been on a Ferris Wheel for years, always wanted to go on the London Eye, but haven't been back for years either.

Interesting about Haynes Publishing, I wonder if Kindle will be amongst their available reading matter.

  6. I'd heard about the Johnny Depp publishing deal.

Great pic. I haven't been on a ferris wheel in years.

  7. Ferris wheels scare me. YIKEs! I have the terrible sense of falling when I'm on one.

    Hugs and chocolate,

  8. Interesting news in the publishing world, as always. I love Ferris wheels, especially the one on Santa Monica Pier.

  9. Am I alone in finding the whole Johnny Depp thing a bit random? It'll be interesting to see what comes out of it, though.

  10. Not sure how I feel about an imprint that publishes a celebrity's fave books...that seems so...pretentious?

P.S. Thanks so much for signing up for my author newsletter. :)

  11. Where do we send our manuscript? And do we get to talk to Johnny D.? It's great news for writers if he does feature those books others don't want to make. I like his taste in which films he supports. This news looks promising.

Nice photo - an empty ferris wheel, or were you in one of the seats?

  12. I heard Johnny Depp was starting an imprint and all I could wonder is whether he would be doing queries in person ;)

  13. Considering the distribution issues I've had this week, it's no wonder small presses are considering selling direct. And it benefits the author even more. No cut for a distributor. It's all good!

  14. Now what kind of stories would I associate with Johnny Depp?

  15. Harper Collins sounds like it's desperately trying to stay relevant if it's using Johnny Depp's name to make sales even when the books aren't his!

I wish I'd been at that comic con. I love those events and I've missed so many in the last few years.

  16. Shelly, I do too!

Stacey, first book is about Bob Dylan.

DG, I was in the bottom seat looking up.

Nancy, distributors and wholesalers take a huge cut - 55-69%.

    LD - weird ones?

  17. I hope Johnny Depp has good taste in reading material!

I like ferris wheels but your photo gives me a strange sense of foreboding...and a creepy idea for a story. ;)

  18. Cool photo. A bit dizzying, but mesmerising!

  19. The ferris wheel shot is SO cool...but it makes me dizzy! I once got stuck on top of one for about 30 minutes. Still like them, though.

    Happy Weekend!

  20. You've built a great composition, nice outlook.

  21. I'm curious as to the Johnny Depp thing, too. Will there be a pirate corner?

I'd love to see other real options for books besides Amazon. I often fear we're trading in the big 6 for the big one.

Wish I could have gone to comiccon.

  22. Laura, then maybe that's a good thing.

Thank you, Leovi. Not bad from a point and shoot.

M Pax, that's why I am leery of Amazon.

  23. That picture made me a little dizzy.

  24. I'd heard of the Johnny Depp thing. So many celebrities getting books out there on the marketplace. Thank goodness for stuff like the recent Did I Notice Your Book Blogfest of this past Wednesday!

  25. What a cool photo! Thanks for the updates from the industry. Have a great weekend!

  26. A wonderful photo, yes, many of celebs established and new ones on getting on the book publishing band wagon.

    Yvonne.

  27. Great post Diane. Johnny Depp, ooohh!

  28. Interesting tid-bits. :-D

Love the photo. This perspective draws me right into it.

  29. Are they going to dress up like at Comic Con? That was probably a stupid question. Have you ridden the Swinging Gondolas as California Adventure?

    ReplyDelete
  30. As I look at that photo, I'm nervous for you. I can't imagine how you took it without getting smacked by a ferris wheel seat. Impressive.

A list "reflecting" Depp's interests? Anyone could write that list. It doesn't mean he's read those books. Sounds like they're desperate for ideas and attention.

    Be well.
