Some people have very structured days and set writing goals. I’ve been self-employed for 13 years now, so a schedule went out the window for me. No two days in my week are the same. At first it was chaos, but I learned to make the chaos my balance.
Those of you who are writers, do you have a set time you write? Do you plan your days to a schedule?
I also wanted to note this upcoming blogfest from two very wonderful authors, Hart Johnson and Elizabeth Spann Craig - The Crazy Cozy Blogfest. They have teamed together to celebrate the release of their books on June 5th.

I'm far too busy to be able to set a time to write, so I just write wherever and whenever I can!
ReplyDeleteNow that I have Glowstick, I work on my novel to be published soon between the hours of 8 and 10:30 pm. Also, I carry a tablet with me everywhere and free-write.
ReplyDeleteI do try to be disciplined...but it's like giving up sweets, I can't! I try to do the boring marketing stuff in the mornings and save the afternoons for writing. It never works out, though :-(

The writing part of my life is less structured than everything else, but I do try to keep to a schedule when I'm working on a manuscript. An hour or two every night, and then the weekends are consumed by nothing else. Its rigorous, but in my case, necessary! :)
ReplyDeleteI think constancy is a very important factor. Yes, I have to be very well organized when I write, or it's not going to work. Having a blog in which I post every Wednesday evening is definitely good practice!

ReplyDeleteAs for schedule-I HAVE to. I work full time and wouldn't get it in at all if there wasn't a specific time for it. I can add a little extra time for a WriMo and when I am editing, I do part of it on my commute, but mostly it is about 7-10 most evenings.
Writing now is more of a catch as catch can thing. Writing time was more structured before I became self-employed. *sigh*

When I am writing I set aside two hours every night. Otherwise I'd never write a thing!

I've had my 3 y/o grandson the last few days, so checking here the blog and trying to keep up with comments is about all I have done TG for the pre schedule button.
ReplyDeleteI usually have multiple projects going, so yes, I schedule. I have set times for social media & writing, etc... I have set days for errand, appts, etc ... I'm a stickler that way.
ReplyDeleteI write in 15 minute sprints. Fifteen minutes in car pool line, 15 minutes at baseball, etc... If not, I'd never write with three growing boys. Okay, I'm from Florida, so that Gator nearly made me fall out of my chair.

My schedule goes out the window this time of year. Once school is over I'll do my writing in the afternoons during the hottest part of the day.
ReplyDeleteI wrote my memoir at 4 am by hand -it was so personal - my hand connected to my heart better than a keyboard - there are no other distractions at 4 am - try it!
ReplyDeleteI tend to work better if everything is not planned out. I do work full time, so that's planned out for me, but even during my workday I will pick & choose what I'm going to work on, with occasional exceptions (i.e. I have a deadline on something so that takes priority).
ReplyDeleteFor my creative stuff, I do have a list of tasks I want to achieve, but which one I work on at any given time is up to me and my moods.
