The Insecure Writer’s Support Group and Exploring Other Genres

It’s time for another edition of The Insecure Writer’s Support Group, founded by Ninja Captain, Alex J. Cavanaugh.

The question for today: Is there a genre you haven't tried writing in yet that you really want to try? If so, do you plan on trying it?

I’ve written non-fiction instructional, non-fiction inspirational, paranormal romance, and new adult.

While I can’t think of another fiction genre I’d want to tackle, I might be interested in a cookbook. Specifically charcuterie boards! (Are you surprised?) I think the biggest challenge with that would be creating the boards and taking professional photos of each one. My photos are fine for snapshots, but I’d have to redo each board and set it up with my lights and big camera. Lots of work.

(Good time to show off one of my latest.)

A language book also is a possibility. Estoy aprendiendo español. (I am learning Spanish.) And in going through dozens upon dozens of simple Spanish books, the ones I really like have pictures. It would be fun to create an extensive book with pictures, the word in English and Spanish, and the pronunciation. (In fact, my Spanish instructor suggested it.) I’d just have to convince my artist husband to draw all the images. LOL!

And in case you missed it - I also posted about stoking creativity through other creative outlets at the IWSG site a couple weeks ago.

What genre would you try?

  1. Those are very fun ideas! Your photos are always super impressive (and mouthwatering). Would go very well in a book.

  4. Trying to write anything for such a long time has been hard but hope to slowly return to the happy blogging life.
    Take care.

  5. Not surprised at all. I think there's power in sticking to a couple genres and becoming an expert -- just like there's power in marketing when you know one platform intimately. That said, you never know where your power audience is and so until you find them, why not dabble?

  6. Yup, you're a master of charcuterie. Do you have a lot of get-togethers? Or is this like a Saturday night watching Netflix feast?

  7. Just letting you know I had company in May and used the picture of one of your charcuterie boards for inspiration. It came out wonderfully! Thank you!

  8. Why to you tease me with your charcuterie every month? So delicious looking. Do the language book. Sounds like something there will be a need for.

  9. I love the idea of you doing a cookbook!

  10. Love the charcuterie boards you share--that would make a pretty picture book, but as you note, a lot of work setting up and getting book-quality photos.

Thanks for the reminder that I need to reclaim some of my non-writing arts.

  12. Oh, you should be amazing as a cookbook writer. I can't wait to read it and see the photos of your boards. The ones you have published here are so appetizing, I want to reach out through the screen and grab some food off them.

  13. OK. I WANT a charcuterie board cookbook that will show me the finished tray AND a sketch map of an empty pen and ink of the tray. I need THAT much guidance. Besides, if they end up looking like yours, I'd be so happy. I think I'd love one that targeted different budgets and party styles...so a chapter on wedding boards versus a sunday home-style brunch. A dessert board and an breakfast coffee gathering board. Just let me know when it's coming out and I'll grab some copies for sure! :)

  15. Both of these are great ideas! I love charcuterie boards. My family is always so excited when I make one. I also like the Spanish idea. When I was a kid, my mom briefly tried to teach me, my sister, and a friend French. She had us make our own dictionary with a picture of each word. So I definitely could see how this might work well for Spanish!

  16. A charcuterie board book would be so fun. Getting the the right stuff to go together--oh and the themes! Food photography is hard, you're right, you need all the right equipment.

  17. A cookbook would be fun to do!

BTW, I saw your comment and sent an email about the shipping error as well as issued a refund for the shipping costs. Let me know when you get it that.

  18. The cookbook sounds interesting, but I agree - photographing food is difficult. From what I've read, the food they use often coated with inedible stuff or is even fake (such as fake ice cubes, because the real ones melt).

  19. What a delicious book idea. I volunteer to be a taste tester.

  20. i’m a terrible cook and am always looking for a delicious cook book to try - i bet you’d make a yummy one!

my boys love to cook but usually get all their recipes from social media. i feel like they’re actually not doing anything new, just watching cooking shows like we used to, but they can pause, rewind, or play at any time =D

    happy july!

  21. You sound like your write in a good variety of genres. I think it's neat that you're learning Spanish. It's great to learn at least one secondary language to increase our cultural awareness.

  22. I think that's a great choice of a new genre. All of your food-ladened boards send me directly to kitchen when I see them.
